Why this information matters
Atlanta slopes relatively steeply from Downtown through Summerhill before flattening out in Peoplestown. During heavy rain, water rushes down the slope and accumulates in Peoplestown’s low-lying areas. In this part of Atlanta, the stormwater and sanitary sewer systems are combined, which can cause floodwater in Peoplestown to contain raw sewage.
Atlanta Watershed previously planned the Connally Storage Vault on Atlanta Public Schools property adjacent to Cheney Stadium. Public descriptions identify a roughly 7- to 7.8-million-gallon, approximately 90,000-square-foot underground structure intended to intercept wet-weather flows from the East and West Connally combined-sewer trunks. The proposed indoor track would be built on land identified for that project.
Atlanta remains subject to federal Clean Water Act consent decrees entered into in 1998 and 1999, requiring upgrades to its combined and separate sewer systems to reduce overflows and improve water quality.
